POLITICAL AWARENESS & INVOLVEMENT

Social Action

In March of 1913, nearly six weeks after its founding, several Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Founders marched in the historic Suffragist March under the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Banner, the Sorority’s first public act. Today, low voter turnout statistics emphasizes the need to continue identifying opportunities for all citizens to exercise their voting power. Each of Delta’s programmatic initiatives has an advocacy component that is implemented under the auspices of social action when it is appropriate or necessary to do so.

Under the auspices of the National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. continues to institute community empowerment activities, such as:

1. Sponsoring voter registration and voter education programs
2. Combating voter suppression
3. The full restoration of voting rights for individuals who have paid their debt to society (ex-offenders)
4. Affordable health care and access to quality health care
5. Financial literacy and economic empowerment
6. Support for HBCUs
7. Gender equality

2020 BCAC SOCIAL ACTION TRAIL

Social Action also rallied our community to participate in being counted for the 2020 Census. Responding to the census ensures appropriate funding, accurate government representation, and adequate access to our community resources. Our very own Barika Williams shared her personal experience and the importance of why it is imperative that our communities must be counted.

Your Vote Matters! Campaign

During election season, Broward County Alumnae Chapter members were heavily invested in spreading awareness and the importance of voting in local races and the general election. Community engagement ranged from social media posts to inform the public of voter registration and early voting deadlines to hosting amendments and candidate forums. Our advocacy for social action didn’t end there as we also participated in a tri-Chapter phone banking event, Souls to the Polls Caravan, and a corner sign street campaign. Social Action is what we do!
