Operating under the auspices of Delta Education and Life Development Foundation, Read America’s mission is to promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading. Members volunteer to tutor students from lower income families at selected elementary schools in an effort to assist them in passing the State Assessment. We also hold an annual Children’s Reading Festival where over 300 children (preschool through fifth grade) enjoy a wonderful day of reading circles, storytelling, face painting, arts and crafts, mini rides, bounce houses and refreshments. At the end of this event, each child receives a gift bag containing a book that the child selects, as well as pencils, crayons, coloring books, and other donated items. As a chapter, we not only sponsor this community event, but we promote literacy at schools by participating in reading challenges and volunteering at schools in classrooms.
