As we conclude this Sisterhood Month, let us we take a moment to remember our sisters that have profoundly affected our lives.
Whether it is our sorority sisters, our biological sisters, our ancestral sisters or our sisters in Christ, may we continue to uplift each other in our individual and collective endeavors to enhance the quality of lives in our communities.
Sisterhood Month 2015...Because IT Matters!
Women's History Month 2015...Because WE Matter!
Today is universally known as the day of love! We should all find comfort in the knowledge that God’s love makes all the difference.
1 John 4:16 teaches us that God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God. What’s more, we are reminded in verse 19 that God was our first love because he first loved us.
May we continue to share his ultimate and supreme love on this day and every day. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Today is a remarkable day that will undoubtedly go down in U.S. history with many of our other civil rights accomplishments!
Fifty-four years ago, nine college students from Rock Hill, South Carolina dared to enter a “whites only” storefront and attempt to sit at the lunch counter. As a result, they were arrested and convicted of trespassing and served thirty days of incarceration. These brave gentlemen opted not to post bail and to instead serve the 30-day jail sentence, thereby spearheading the "Jail, No Bail" civil rights strategy.
Eight of the nine survivors, affectionately known as the Friendship Nine, were back in court today and witnessed the judge vacate their 1961 convictions. The Solicitor, representing the State of South Carolina’s interest, proudly stood and commended these pioneers for having the courage to do then, what we all know now, was the righteous thing to do.
Congratulations to the Friendship Nine and all of our civil rights pioneers. BCAC is forever thankful for your sacrifice.
The season is changing, but the work of the Broward County Alumnae Chapter is never ending. The summer gave us an opportunity to reflect and plan for a year that promises to keep service at the forefront and sisterhood at the core. In June, we attended the 44th Southern Regional Conference in Tampa, FL. The conference was informative, eventful and served as a fresh way to jumpstart our 2014-2015 year. In early August, we held our Round-Up/Chapter Retreat. It was a refresher on the importance of our uncompromising commitment to lead, empower and uplift the communities we serve and love.
With this in mind, we helped set children’s school year ablaze by assisting families with necessary school supplies. Yes, that means, the back to school flow is in full swing and it is vital that I pause and salute our school employees; encourage parental involvement and pray for our educational system.
So lastly, while school zones slow down our normal routines, I ask that you fast track your thoughts and recall the Women’s Suffrage March in 1913. Consider the unwavering efforts of our ancestors in their sacrifice for equality… for the right to vote! Exercise your right and Vote Absentee, Vote Early, or Vote Election Day but Definitely Vote!
